Obama Won’t Be Shopping At Classic Pins As He Drops American Flag Pin
WATERLOO, Iowa - Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama, D-Ill., said he will no longer wear an American Flag lapel pin because it has become a substitute for “true patriotism” since the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.
He commented on the pin in a television interview Wednesday and then again on Thursday at a campaign appearance in Independence, Iowa.
“My attitude is that I’m less concerned about what you’re wearing on your lapel than what’s in your heart,” he told the campaign crowd Thursday. “You show your patriotism by how you treat your fellow Americans, especially those who serve. You show your patriotism by being true to our values and ideals. That’s what we have to lead with is our values and our ideals.” - Courtesy (AP)
It is hard to argue the point that wearing an American Flag pin does not substitute for an act of being patriotic. But it almost seems that Obama hints that wearing one can make you unpatriotic. Or that other rival politicians donning an American Flag pin, who do not share Obama’s political standpoints, are creating a double standard by wearing such a patriotic item.
Wearing the American Flag pin simply reminds people who we are and what we stand for. Should we stop wearing the American Flag pin because we don’t agree with the views of some people who do? Do we stop wearing our pendants or pins that express our feeling concerning God because we don’t all share the same views about our Heavenly Father. The answer is no! Obama should put his pin back on to remind us all what he stands for. Wearing an American Flag pin has nothing to do with our acts of patriotism… but purposely removing it does! So Mr. Obama, we will not accuse you of double standard patriotism when you make your next controversial political decision, because after all…you don’t wear an American Flag pin.
